week of freezing temperatures around bay area. i think we can finally see the end in sight though. but this morning, you headed out we've got some very cold temperatures. clear skies that arctic air continues to sit overhead. temperatures down the 25 degrees -- to 2 degrees in concord. -- 25-degrees in concord. even look at that our temperature is frozen so darn cold out there. very cold temperatures around the bay area at this hour. looks like by the afternoon temperatures going to moderate a little bit. the mid 50s in the warmest spots and you know what? later in the week we're going to see the temperatures moving up to the 60s and maybe some 70s as we head toward next week. all right. that's a look at weather and let's check on traffic now with elizabeth. thank you lawrence. the delays continue from san francisco out towards the east bay on b.a.r.t.. the problem is a power outage at the daly city stop. they're having a hard time getting some dublin bound trains out of the daly city yard. so essentially right now there's very limited b.a.r.t. service from san francisco to

dublin pleasanton. sounds like they were able to get some trains through there now. they're sending some trains from dublin trying to pick up passengers and get folks out of the city. in the meantime, these delays continue this could have residual delays but other b.a.r.t. lines and if you're trying to get out of san francisco, if you're having a hard time getting there, you can use the free monday line right now. essentially the -- fremont line right now. essentially the yellow or the orange lines and you can transfer at the bay fair stop. we know crews are on scene now. you're hitting the roads, this is what it looks like right now on highway 4. just a quick note a multicar crash. still blocking one lane westbound highway 4 at lone tree. the delays were a little earlier can they're working to clear it. that's your latest kcbs traffic. back to you guys. a massive public memorial underway right now in south africa for civil rights legend nelson mandela. a live look at the i votes in johannesburg where people are joined by dig my tears from all

over -- dignitaries from all over the world including the president barack obama who spoke a short time ago. kpix 5's joins us now. >> reporter: a crowd of 90,000 showed up -- people showed up to bid farewell to the former president. and the weather played no role in the atmosphere of today's ceremony. the group has been singing and dancing to songs from the apartheid struggle. the crowd included 91 heads of state including president obama and three former u.s. presidents. mr. obama delivered his eulogy emphasizing that mandela's journey continues as does the struggle for equality. >> for around the world today, we still see children suffering from hunger and disease. we still see rundown schools.

we still see young people without prospects for the future. around the world today, men and women are still in prison for their political beliefs and are still persecuted for what they look like and who they love and how they worship. that is happening today. >> reporter: the four hour ceremony is being held in south africa's national soccer stadium. it's be nelson mandela made his first major speech after being released from prison in 1990. before the world leaders began their speeches, it was the south africans who gave the most heartfelt tributes saying this mandela gave up his freedom for theirs. reporting live in the newsroom, kate koa gash yanks kpix 5. >> he'll be given an official funeral on sunday in his hometown village. the ntsb has postponed a two day hearing that was to begin into july's deadly plane crash at the san francisco

airport. bad weather shut down the government in washington, d.c.. the ntsb is looking into whether the pilots relied too much on computer systems when the asiana airlines plane approached the runway. the plane hit a seawall. the crash killed three girls and injured nearly half of the 307 people aboard. >> if you have blind trust in the system, if you don't monitor it constantly. if you aren't actively engaged is aware and if you don't have the confidence to quickly manually fly the plane well as soon as you detect the automation isn't doing what you thought it should be doing it can lead to trouble very quickly. we're now getting a better idea of how a korean war vet from the bay area was getting detained in north korea. the statement 85-year-old merrill newman says he didn't understand that for the communist regime, the korean war isn't over yet and that even innocent remarks about the war can cause big problems if you're a foreigner. newman says he was treated well but constantly under guard in his hotel. says his interrogator made it

clear that if he did not cooperate, he could be sentenced to 15 years in jail for espionage. >> attack communication system and killed three innocent operators. >> and as for that videotaped apology, newman says it was a fake and he was forced to do it. newman was released saturday after morn more than a month of -- more than a month of detention. today growing concern for six family members missing in northern nevada. the per,ing county sheriff's department says james glatton and christina mcinti haven't been seen since after taking four kids to play. searchers have been scouring the area snowy and bitter cold this week. >> it's getting more and more urgent as we -- as we go. but we're running out of time. and time is not on our side. >> the kids range in age from 3 to 10 years old. well, the freezing temperatures hanging all over the bay area are dangerously cold once again. at least six deaths are now

blamed on the cold and kiet do is live in sunnyvale out in the elements again and the big concern during the frigid nights are the homeless out on the streets. >> reporter: yes, and the shelter has responded in a big way by allowing a lot of the people coming to stay here at the shelter to stay throughout the day. now you see here they are woken up at their normal time at 5:00 a.m. typically, they are pushed out after breakfast and that's when the shelter closes. now the two new desks have been frustrated especially for the workers who have been fanning out into the homeless encampment tries to encourage people to come into the shelters. three locations, one in sunnyvale and another in san jose and then the third one in morgan hill. with a total of 275 beds. well, last week, the cold snap hit and it killed four people and then the number of beds was temporarily increased to 375. after a week of sub freezing temperatures, word is finally getting out on the street and more people are coming in from

the cold. >> oh it scares me because i don't want to die. not that way. >> reporter: now the shelter goes back to normal operations tonight. that's what we're hearing at last report. which means the beds will be dropping back down to 275. even though we've got a -- a few more days of cold weather still ahead. we're live in sunnyvale, kiet do, kpix 5. police are looking for a man who broke into three cars and took christmas presents meant for children in need. one of the break-ins was caught on a surveillance camera. one of the victims is marsy moriarty a nurse at oakland children's hospital. the night before she had loaded up her car with $1,500 worth of toys for sick kids and their families. >> they would have had to either climb in the window or open the door and come in because the presents were full into the back. and so there was no way they could have just reached in and grabbed it. >> police say the same suspects on the surveillance video used a gift card in target and he is

now on video not once but twice. some other bay area news now. police in martinez hope surveillance video here will lead to the arrest of a thief here. it shows a man swiping a package from the front porch of a home. this is on rolling hill way. the theft happened during the evening of saturday, november 30th. san francisco's city leaders are looking to slow down tobacco sales. more than 12 million packs of cigarettes were sold in the city last year. that's up from previous years. supervisor eric mahr hopes to spruce a bill next month -- introduce a bill next month. existing business will not be affected. big time wrestling expected to be coming soon to the bay area and the place here the santa clara 49ers stadium. news conference scheduled this morning. reportedly to announce wrestlemania will be held at the new silicon valley landmark in 2015. wrestlemania the biggest annual event for the pro wrestling circuit the wwe. santa clara had been competing

cup soccer sta world pauses to remember nelson mandela. you're looking at some live pictures from the world cup soccer stadium in soweto. it's a cold and rainy day while that has kept many people away, thousands still showed up to celebrate mandela's life this morning. people have been singing and dancing at several world leaders including president obama gave tribute to the late leader. mandela memorial is trending this morning also

trending, eleanor parker, "the sound of music" actress passed away yesterday at 91. cockroach a new super cockroach has been found in the u.s.. it's believed to have come from asia. world of war craft. new leaked documents reveal the nsa has been spying on fantasy games like world of war craft. and mars, nasa curiosity rover discovered that a fresh water lake may have existed on the red planet. you can follow us at -- how about some traffic? here's liz with more on that. >> once again we are talking mass transit and b.a.r.t.. these delays are countercommute. right now, we're not hearing of any delays heading into san francisco. the delays are mainly impacting the san francisco to dublin pleasanton line. that's where they essentially shut down direct service for a while. so right now there are some trains heading out of dublin specifically to pick up some of the crowds and you can also use the orange line you see there

on the screen. the fremont line. and transfer at the bay fare stop. if you need to head out towards dublin pleasanton. the problem if you were watching earlier there's a power issue near the daly city b.a.r.t. yard. they're working on fixing it now but no time when they are going to get in resolved. in the meantime the delays out to the east bay continue on the san francisco stops. caltrain, ace everything else no problems. this stent is still there causing bigger delays than usually see on highway 4 westbound. westbound highway 4 at lone tree that accident is blocking one lane. and you can see the slowdowns now coming off of the antioch bridge and heading towards your antioch exit. bay bridge commute looking good this morning. so if you want to avoid b.a.r.t. upper and lower deck traffic looks good right now heading into and out of san francisco. and the new eastern span very quiet as well. heading off to the pay gates and here's a live look at the san pate knee bridge. a nice drive out of heyward heading over the high-rise towards the peninsula. we still have the issues though

in half-moon bay. a fatal accident overnight and a stretch of highway 1 is closed between venice boulevard and key hoe avenue. that's your latest kcbs traffic. for more on your cold weather forecast, how much longer am i going to have to say that? it's been day after day after day. over a week now of freezing temperatures, today no exception. the offshore winds that very cold dry air settling in overhead. and these temperatures really taking a nosedive again today. 23 now in napa. 25 in santa rosa. 28 in livermore and even 29 in san jose and mountain view and redwood city. when you see the 20s inside the bay you know it's a very very cold air mass. still i think this could be the worst of it after today, i think things begin to moderate a little bit. in fact by this afternoon, a little bit warmer with plenty of sunshine. and then high pressure starts building in ever so slowly and that is going to warm us up. by the weekend i think the temperatures actually running above average. here we go high pressure beginning to slide in towards the coastline a little bit. that's starting to squeeze that

air further to the east and i think by tomorrow we're going to see some 60s popping up around the bay area. we'll start to warm things up. how about this? 50s into the central valley. the high country looking good and the roadways nice and clear in that direction. about 44 degrees in lake tahoe. computer models keeping things clear this morning. then towards the evening hours we see high clouds drifting overhead and that may help to keep the temperatures a little bit warmer overnight tonight and early tomorrow morning. highs today going to be warmer. 56 degrees in san jose. 55 in millipedes. east bay temperatures should be moving up into the 40s and a few 50s. then inside the bay some mild sunshine about 54-degrees in oakland. 53 in san francisco. and 52 in sausalito. by tomorrow, we could see a 60 haven't been able to say that for quite a while. then into the weekend, other than passing clouds on friday the temperatures really start to heat up. i i think a very strong ridge of high pressure begins to build in and temperatures soaring well into the 60s and wouldn't be surprised as we head in toward next monday and

tuesday, if we actually see some 70s show up on the side. >> no way. >> i love that. >> one extreme to the other. >> i'll pick the warmer weather. >> i would like to seal some now. -- see some now. 5:19 now. more than a dozen current and former members of the l. a. sheriff's department. well they've been arrested. all part of the ongoing investigation into alleged abuse of inmates and visitors at two jails in downtown l. a.. 18 deputies indicted on monday for abuse and violating civil rights and also accused of filing phony reports to cover up the behavior. the prosecutor says criminal activity was systematic. >> federal investigation found that these incidents did not take place in a vacuum. in fact, the examples of illegal conduct alleged in these indictments demonstrated that certain of the individuals and certain of that behavior had become institutionalized.

>> the sheriff says there's no problem within the sheriff's department. two men have now been charged with stealing wreckage from actor paul walker's car crash. the "l.a. times" is reporting 18-year-old and 25-year-old followed a tow truck that was hauling the destroyed porsche carrera. they stole a roof panel while the truck was at a stoplight. the teenager is now free on bail. the other suspect is expected to surrender later today. they died in the crash just last week. it's a big accomplishment for a captain in minnesota from the salvation army. >> that's one tired guy there. that's captain jim brickson among three people who just set a new world record by singing a bell for 105 hours for the salvation army. >> they all felt satisfied that their story was told as well. and it was time to say enough is enough. other two bell ringers for other statessen clouding one in urn -- including one in

rights icon nelson mandela. this was a live look at the event in johannesburg where tens of thousands of people are joined by leaders from around the world. four u.s. presidents including president obama are there. kpix 5's cate caugurian is in the newsroom this morning with the latest on the set brace happen -- celebration happening right now. >> reporter: it's all been very moving. today the world says their final good-bye to nelson mandela and despite the bad weather tens of thousands of people are celebrating the antiapartheid leader. even through the rain, south africans sang and danced in celebration of a life of nelson mandela. >> in our african tradition, when it rains, when you're buried, it means that your goals are welcoming you and the gaze of heaven are probably open as well. >> reporter: tens of thousands packed the national soccer stadium in johannesburg to honor the man who saved the nation from deep racial divide. >> emerging from prison without

the force of arms, he was -- like abraham lincoln hold his country together when it threatened to break apart. >> reporter: president obama was among the heads of state asked to speak at the service. >> the world thanks you for sharing nelson mandela with us. >> reporter: thousands of police officers have been deployed around the stadium to look for suspicious activity while helicopters watched from above. >> it's unprecedented. this is unquestionably the biggest event that south africa will ever see. >> reporter: even parents were asked to take extra precautions. the government advised them to write their cell phone numbers on the arms of their children in case they got separated. following today's service, mandela's body will be taken to another city in south africa before it is buried on sunday. a memorial service for mandela is also planned in washingtonback where the oakland -- washington, d.c.

where the oakland pacific boys would be will be part of the -- choir will be part of the celebration. the ninth grader bran dan singer -- brendan singer says had the greatest impact in 2009. they traveled the nelson mandela's home. >> being in his house, seeing where he stood and got all the great ideas. >> the event at the national cathedral is set for thursday. sheriff's deputy who fatally shot a 13-year-old boy up in sonoma county back at work now. erick gelhaus went through a mental health screening and yesterday placed on desk duty. gelhaus shot lopez in october after he mistook the teen's toy gun for an assault rifle. investigators say lopez didn't comply with orders to drop the weapon. gelhaus had been on leave since that october 22nd shooting. activists along with lopez's friends and family are still angry about the shooting. a march is planned later this afternoon to protest his return back to work. set to begin at 4:00 at santa rosa city hall. the dangerous cold snap

lingering here if the bare and -- in the bay area and this morning a warning going out theth homeless. kpix 5's kiet do, he is live in sunnyvale now and the weather particularly dangerous for the homeless. >> reporter: yes, especially since it's somewhere in the 20- degree range right now. we're live here in sunnyvale. this was the largest overnight shelter in the south bay. the frigid weather here is forcing a lot of people indoors choosing and allowing them to go inside i should say. now people have been woken up at 5:00 this morning. typically they are pushed out after breakfast. but that is not the case because of the cold weather. they will be allowed to stay throughout the day. now the number of deaths blamed on the cold weather is now up so six on the night. many of the homeless died and there were actually empty beds at the shelter. workers have been reaching out to the homeless and visiting them in their tents and camps throughout the county. the number of beds have been increased temporarily from 275

to 375. they're now seeing more elderly and women and with children at the shelters. those staying overnight say the extra hours and the beds are a godsend. >> i thought it was a pleasanting. i thought it was -- a blessing. i thought it was good for especially the seniors. the elders and the women. it was surprising because i haven't heard of that before. over the years. but again, it's a good thing. >> reporter: and at last report, the number of beds will be dropping back down to normal from 375 to 275. that is even though we still have some cold weather still ahead. with more on that, here's lawrence. >> yeah very cold temperatures again. we've got freeze warnings up for much of the bay area but this is probably the last widespread cold day of this whole cold snap it looks like things are going to begin to warm up outside. out the door right now. we've got clear skies and these temperatures freezing again. in the san jose. 29 degrees. 28 livermore and 25 in concord. low 20s into the napa valley.

and 25 degrees in santa rosa. now looks like the freeze warnings now are up for most of the bay area except for san francisco. that's where we're seeing some milder temperatures. freeze warnings going to be reissued again tonight but most of that will just be in the valleys. temperatures this afternoon, you'll notice some changes there. we will see some warming as we're going to see highs in the mid 50s into san jose. temperatures moving in the 50s also in toward mountain view. about 55-degrees there and 53 in san francisco and by this weekend, some of the numbers could get near 70 degrees. we'll have more on that in a moment. right now check out the traffic with elizabeth. and we are reinvolving a whole lot of -- resolving a whole lot of traffic problems out there right now including the roads. a crash near lone tree all lanes are now clear. red sensors so there's a little worse than we usually see at this point of the morning. the accident may be off to the right hands shoulder and maybe some activity there. otherwise, well -- we had some earlier b.a.r.t. issues. i would show you a map.

my clicker the stuck. so b.a.r.t. is once again resolved and there may be delays from san francisco out towards dublin. there was an earlier power issue on the third rail and again that was at the daly city stop. but the big news is that all service has been restored now. so any delays are just residual ones and they should be getting b.a.r.t. trains back on track here very short lit. that's the latest -- shortly. that's the latest traffic, back to you. a man broke into a car loaded with hundreds of dollars of christmas presents intended for kids at oakland's children's hospital. this morning police are poring over surveillance video and kpix 5 reporter mark kelly is in benicia where police say the same suspects committed several break-ins. then used a stolen gift card. mark? >> reporter: michelle it seems like something right out of the grinch movie. today investigators will be back on the scene taking a closer look at their surveillance video from this target store. but the video that they have already seen is enough to put a damper on anyone's christmas joy.

if you noticed your skin is probably drying out a little bit because we're seeing the cold dry air overhead. temperatures right now in the 20s in the north bay valleys and even some 20s in towards the san jose area this morning. by the afternoon though the temperatures going to start to moderate a little bit as high pressure builds overhead. a bit warmer and then i think even warmer. by the end of the weekend maybe some of the temperatures near 70 degrees. all right, high pressure beginning to build in. that is beginning to squeeze that arctic air mass further to the east. starting to warm things up into the next couple of days, sunny skies expected at sfo. across the country though, a cold tarp working its way into new york. that likely to bring some snowfall and maybe some delays there. 22 degrees and cold in chicago. 36 in denver. but dry and 49 degrees in houston. around the bay today, you'll see the temperatures a little bit warmer. mid 50s in the san jose and mountain view. about 54 in oakland and 52 degrees in livermore. as we head towards the next couple of days these

a violent night in jew crane. clashes broke out between riot police and anti-government protestors. opposition leaders say several protestors were hurt when police tore down small tent encampments blocking access to government buildings in kiev. a much larger protest site at independence square was not raided. they are angry at the government for turning away from a european union bailout. protestors say government officials are being influenced by russia. in florida george zimmerman's girlfriend has formally asked prosecutors to drop a domestic violence case against him. zimmerman was arrested last month after the two had a heated fight. prosecutors say they can still pursue the charges but they'd be difficult to prove without the accuser's cooperation in the case. it's the latest brush with the law for zimmerman since his acquittal in that trayvon martin shooting case earlier this year. well, youngster from colorado is on a mission. he wants to save nasa. >> 6-year-old connor johnson
